IT Technical Support Apprentice

This is a fantastic opportunity to work and learn all aspects of the school’s technical needs alongside the current technical staff.  You will already have enthusiasm and some experience of diagnosing problems and mending IT equipment.

The main roles of the position are detailed as follows:-

Maintenance of The School ICT Computer Facilities:

  • Contribute to the provision of ICT Support throughout the school under the direction of the ICT Systems Manager in areas of allocated responsibility
  • Contribute to optimising department’s performance, including implementation of changes to office duties
  • Undertake maintenance of ICT hardware
  • Assist in the management of the schools wireless network
  • Liaise with partners and suppliers of the school on ICT as directed by the ICT Technician (to include local borough technical centre)

Assistance to Staff and Students Using ICT – Including Software Support:

  • Setting up of equipment for the delivery of the curriculum
  • Contribute to ICT training and advise school staff as appropriate
  • Staff software training where required


  • Assist in auditing of schools’ ICT & AV equipment

Service Desk Support:

  • Help to maintain a help desk system that ensures requests for work are prioritised and completed in line with the department’s standards
  • Monitor schools’ call logging system
  • Work towards achieving and maintaining ITIL recognised standards of support
  • Problem solve and troubleshoot issues on the staff & students computers such as software, hardware, configuration and user errors

ICT Hardware Installation And Maintenance:

  • Install and configure new and existing IT equipment, assisting in project management as directed by the ICT Technician and ICT Manager
  • Carry out repairs and maintenance to hardware to maximise the efficiency of equipment, under the direction of the ICT Technician
  • Ensure the correct disposal of damaged and un-repairable equipment and that the school meets its recycling duties in line with current procedures and legislation
  • Assist with maintenance of schools’ network cabling infrastructure
  • Assist in providing staff pc clinic to college (as directed by ICT Technician)


  • Carry out all problem solving, changes, configuration, availability, capacity and continuity processes in-line with the Framework for ICT in Schools (FITS) recommendations and guidelines under the direction of the ICT Systems Manager
  • Actively pursue training and accreditation on agreed plans for the school network and system developments and upgrades including software
  • Take responsibility for own professional development, continually keep updated about new initiatives in educational ICT, and contribute to the school as a learning organisation
  • To be mindful of Health and Safety of pupils and other staff in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and DSE legislation
  • Assist with the implementation of projects and school ICT initiatives
  • To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, which do not change the character and purpose of the post as, may be determined after negotiations between management, the post holder and the appropriate trade union (where applicable)

There may be occasional working outside of normal school hours as required.

As this position is based in a school, a DBS check will be required prior to the commencement of the role.

Working week

  • Monday – Friday: 8am – 4pm
  • Total hours per week: 37.50
  • Weekly wage: £146.25
  • Expected duration: 18 months

Training to be provided

  • Level 3 Infrastructure Technician Apprentice qualification together with onsite training by the employer
  • For those starting at Advanced (Level 3), the expected duration would be 18 months.  There is an opportunity to progress on to the Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4) and ultimately on to a Degree Apprenticeship.
