The Development Manager

Helping Adult Learning providers to prosper with free software and people development

The Development Manager, Derrin Kent, will install, tailor, integrate, host and administrate Moodle and other FLOSS applications for Training Providers as well as prepare your staff to use the platform(s) effectively.

Many training providers like the idea of offering e-Learning solutions...

...but need a kick-start to get things going.

Through a systematic process development process: ANALYSIS-> SPECIFICATION-> DESIGN-> IMPLEMENTATION-> EVALUATION-> CONTINUATION PLANNING, Derrin will support your staff team to implement an e-learning solution which meets your specific learners' and organisational needs. This process can be delivered in a short time-scale (e.g. one day - see Derrin's very reasonable rates) to develop e.g. a single moodle course for you - or it can be applied over a more extended support contract (e.g. 1 week per month x 6 months) to deliver a detailed, complex knowledge management infrastructure which will radically improve your organisational performance.

Stages of e-learning solution implementation:
  1. Analysis
  2. Specification
  3. Design
  4. Implementation
  5. Evaluation
  6. Continuation Planning

Derrin is a qualified and experienced Moodler. This not only requires technical Moodle administration skills, including a command of CSS, (X)HTML, PHP & MySQL, etc. code, but, far more importantly, it requires instructional design skills. Derrin graduated in Education Studies in 1988 and has been working the field of education ever since, predominantly in Adult Education.

Derrin has been actively interested in the social construct learning philosophy underpinning Moodle for over 8 years and has given many public presentations on the topic. Derrin also has an active interest in distinguishing between formal and informal learning design as well as taking an active interest in exploring the practical application of communities of practice theory for learners at various educational levels (from learners with pre-level 1 educational attainment through to post-graduates).

Derrin says: I'm not only a bit of a geek, I'm also a bit of a teacher.

You may be able to find good trainers, and good web designers.... but getting them to work effectively together can be quite another issue. Derrin rolls both skills into one expansive body and makes them available to you on outsource terms at absurdly reasonable weekly/daily rates.

Not just anybody can design a Moodle site which really works. Derrin has a developed, tried and tested approach to Moodle site design and has at his disposal a wide range of practical ideas for using Moodle, not only with WBL learners, but also to facilitate training provider staff and management communications and practical employer engagement strategies. Derrin will help you to structure a Moodle site as you want it structured and will happily equip you with the tools you'll need to continue to maintain and develop it for yourselves - with or without further recourse to Derrin's consultancy support.

Derrin is keen to support you and provide you with as much or as little support as you need from him. He will always endeavour to give you as frank and honest an estimation of how much time what you are asking for will take him to complete and will never be dishonest in what he is charging you for him to do.
